Case Study - Solid Sheet
Caribbean Leisure Centre

Standing high above the South Sea palms that shelter this Caribbean dream, is the stunning roofing of this leisure-centre paradise near Munich.

The most impressive element of the roofing is the cupola over the thermal bath. Astonishingly, it is 56m in diameter and covers an area of 2,500m2 without any supports. The cupola can be opened and closed at will, much like the roof of a convertible BMW. However, the magic lies in the fact that there are no additional heavy masses to be moved in the form of glazing, which would prevent this 120-tonne steel structure from being opened at all.

The glazing comprises a lightweight, co-extruded multiwalled sheet in LONGLIFE Makrolon®, approx. 25mm thick, which also provides excellent thermal insulation. This transparent, UV-stabilized polycarbonate sheet has a heat transfer coefficient K of 1.7W/m2. K with a weight per unit area of only 3.7kg/m2. A ‘No Drop' coating on the underneath of the sheet prevents any dripping from condensation. Essential ‘smart technology' considering the leisure paradise is heated to 38°C via thermal water from a geo-source 2,350m deep.
